Thanks!! I'm working on the StoryBoard part right now . . . but I guess I'm not exactly sure what to do. Should I have all of the photos and music inserted into this program? What should the end result look like? Is it just a list of things we intend to use in the iMovie?? Any thoughts would be welcomed :o)

yeah! i am not the only one with questions.... I am not sure either? Anyone???

I have the same problem. I just don't get StoryBoard. It seems to be just a layout of our movie? Is that right? Since I have never done video, I find it easier to actually import the pictures into MovieMaker's storyboard and see how it looks. then go back make the layout in Storyboard. I don't think that's the way it is supposed to work.

Maybe, I also have a problem. But from where I stand I think the storyboard is supposed to help us set out the story we want to tell and exactly what we want to be included in it(picture, video, voiceover, and sound - and where we want each to be. This is to save us time and resources and to make us more focused on what we intend to do since we might have much more information for our projects than we actually need to use. So this will set out for us the starting point ....and the end so we don't try to organize our stories simultaneously with making the video. If I am right I hope this helps.

I am trying to use Storyboard with my eighth grade class right now. I am telling them to use it as a rough draft of their video and to use it to organize all their parts before they begin putting it all together. We just opened it and looked at it today, so I am not sure how well it is going to work. I have had several problems getting it to download on our network.

I believe making the StoryBoard for Assign. #1 is like preparing the outline of our movie for Assignment #2. I've been going through the tedious prep. of sorting through old photos that I may decide to use, etc. I also viewed as many Dig. Stories I could find w/in our readings. I then tried to find additional Dig. Stories to give me more ideas. Here is a list I thought I'd share:

OK. At first I thought this looks pretty simple. Put in what my movie is going to be like, a simple outline. Then why am I having so much trouble? I think I am missing something with this storyboard pro. Can you play it through? How do you know how the music sounds or do you need to for this part of the project? I can't easily put in my pics and such. I created one and now can pull it back up, I just see the first slide. What am I missing??? HELP!!!!

salshaus said...

To anybody having problems setting up the storyboard, If you go to the atomic learning website Dr. Franklin posted they have some movies that offer tutorials on exactly how to set up the storyboard. For a quick fix the link is: http://movies.atomiclearning.com/k12/storyboardpro

At first, I didn't like the idea of using StoryBoard. I thought it would be like doing the project twice - first in StoryBoard then again in Movie Maker.

Once I actually started using StoryBoard, I found it a lot easier to write my story. You don't have to worry about formatting the text or slide transitions, etc. You can focus on the story part of the video, then go find the photos you want to use.

Anna, thanks for the You Tube links to additional Digital Storytelling videos. I have not reviewed them all; however, I'm getting lots of ideas from the ones reviewed so far!!

For those that would like additional information on developing stories and storyboards, see the first article in Week 1-Center for Digital Storytelling. After reading the Seven Elements for Digital Stories, I understand the process much better now!

Does anyone know the best format to save the storyboard file in? When I save as a .tab or a .USR, my computer does not recognize a program to open the files. How are you saving your files in preparation for the DropBox during assignment submission? - Thanks, Charlie

Charlie,

I have the same question. I don't want to send a file that can not be opened.

Hello
I haven't been able to download Storyboard Pro, please someone can tell me how to do it. Thank you very much.

For those of you having problems downloading the software be sure that you are getting the correct version that is compatible with your system. I messed it up the first time but discovered what happened and the second time everything went fine.

Has anyone had trouble with the spell check feature? I could not get this to work. Ended up I checked it by hand arggg!

Also I agree with Barry, At first I thought this to b a cumbersome process. I would have rather just put it into the movie maker without this step. I have a tendency to learn better by jumping in. but some of my kids in class don't work that way they have to see it writen out first. I found that as I worked through the storyboard I had a better idea of what I would put in the movie. I have to confess though I mad a dummy movie and played with the effects to see what I wanted to use.

I had trouble figuring out how to save my storyboard for sending as well. I don't know if it's correct or not, but I downloaded a free PDF converter called PrimoPDF. (You may not need to do this if you already have a PDF printer installed.) Then, at the List View screen, choose File, Print Setup. Choose the PDF printer as your printer. Then when you File, Print it will print to a PDF file instead of a printer. Hope this helps.

Help! story board keeps crashing. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the software, but it doesn't even show up in my program list. I was just starting to get it all figured out.

I have the same problem and don't know what the storyboard result should look like. But I think we could try to finish a draft video for Assgn 2 first. What do you guys think? Any comments would be appreciated!

Just wondering if everyone included the music selections and the lengths of each slide?

Wei said...

I won't include the music in the storyboard, cuz storyboard is kind of tell people and ourselves how to build up the video from the story perspecive step by step. Don't you agree, guys?

Dave Burkhart said...

I did include my music selections in my Storyboard. Why? I thought it would be a help to me because I found the music clips I wanted to use and am thinking I will never find them again if I don't make note of them. FreePlayMusic.com has so many choices that I can be overwhelming. It is a great resource, but I get lost. Once I find a clip I like, I forget where it was, so I used Storyboard to make note of the selections I wanted to use.

For some scenes, I have three records in Storyboard. One describes the still image or video I plan to use. A second is called "Voice Over" and is the script for what I am going to say. A third is the music title and on what album of FreePlayMusic I found the clip. As for the times, I only put a time on one of the three records as an estimate. I don't think I can truly judge how long it will be at this point in time and might have to change things as I produce the video.

Hi Charlie,
I saved my StoryBoard as a .USR file. I used StoryBoard import record to open the file. It's possible working, I'm not sure.

Kurt Dreier said...

The saving of the storyboard was confusing but this is what I did. Tell me if I am wrong Dr. Franklin.

I went to New Storyboard-Save As-changed the name to my -lastnameA1.USR. I included the dreierA1.USR and the Tips.USR files in a zip folder and sent it to Dr. Franklin. If I just sent the main file without the Tips.USR file then it wouldn't work. Hopefully that is correct. I will however try to save as a PDF in the future as someone suggested (Jeanette?)

Kurt Dreier said...

Jenny,
Yes I did include the length of each clip and the approximate clip where I would make the two audio track transitions but no exact time on the audio. Each of my tracks have varying tempos (or movements)within each song so I am not sure exactly what part of each song I will use. (My apologies to the music teachers for my misuse of musical lingo)

Karole said...

Dr. Turner,

Would you please let us know if what we uploaded works or whether we need to upload in a different manner than the one we used?

Thanks

Ok, I am finding the Storyboard program extremely frustrating to use. Looking at examples of storyboards on the web the concept appears to be more layered than what I am getting with Storyboard. Maybe I'm missing something here, but it appears to be very linear. I don't understand how music, voice overs, and transitions should be laid out in Storyboard. It seems to me it should be something like this:

http://www.storycenter.org
/memvoice/pages/tutorialstory.html

I'm not getting that with Storyboard. Maybe I'm missing something? With Imovie you have the layers there. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I followed Jeanette's suggestion of saving to pdf. I remembered from using filemaker pro in the past that exporting is a very tricky thing with that software. My file was HUGE. I would not recommend the use of this software. It was a great a idea, but too tedious and it kept crashing!!! Since Movie maker has a storyboard build into it, I found it easier to use that. Unfortunately, that doesn't give you the ability to share it except in its final version like Storyboard did.

I was confused many time as i started doing Assignment1 ... but learning by doing took time but i got it at the end. I send it as html and after that i couldn't open it the way i want to.
It works totally different by Story-Board than by Movie-Maker.

Ryan Collopy said...

The only issue I really had while working with the storyboard program was that i could not include two images for one set of text so I just commented about the pictures/scans that would be in the movie for each set of text.

Week One Readings:

I found the reading assignment for week one very interesting and helpful. I can honestly say that coming into this course I had no idea what a digital story board was... so NO idea how to create one or use it in my classroom.

After reading the articles- I treasure the fact that creating a story board is more than just using technology in your classroom- It is about adding excitment to the writing process. Loosing the "I don't have anything to write about" attitude makes it totally worth the extra planning time for the teacher and the studnets!!!!
