Week Four Readings (for the late folks)

The first reading I found especially interesting was the article on Internet 2 and Libraries.  My mother is a librarian in a K-12 institution and I figured she might have some more information on the subject so I called her and asked her. She said she vaguely remembers hearing of Internet2 but wanted more information. We chatted about what I had read and I sent her the link to the article. I was surprised when I did some additional research on Internet2 to find the expense. A higher education facility like Ohio University would have to pay $32,000 a year for the service. I understand what they are trying to do with it and keeping it so that the main use is for Education and research but I found that figure a little staggering.

When Internet2 isn't so new I hope that it becomes more financially feasible for public education to become a part of it so that students may access information for research and learning. I hope that it remains out of reach for individuals, not for research, so that the intent and purpose don't become skewed.

I also was unaware of the Horizon Report, that anything like this existed. I was so impressed with the information that was presented. I was a little excited to see that it was a newer project and that I haven't been missing this for years! I will now check each year to read their review .

The article "Every child a Publisher" discusses the impact of using multimedia in the class. The article quotes "Textbooks are a nineteenth and twentieth century innovation designed to make teaching and learning uniform. " I thought this statement was significant because textbooks are uniform and really only incorporates the visual sense and I believe to learn and retain information a child needs to use as many senses as possible. And not all children are uniform. Each child learns and retains information in different ways. Using multimedia in the class lets a child use touch, sight and sound which will help them to retain more of the information.

Educational Technology in Teacher Preparation
It is clear in all the articles that there is a great need to “properly” integrate technology into the daily classwork in order to maximize its effectiveness on student outcomes. New teachers should have specific training in these areas. It does seem as though there is a lot of work to do to come up with consistent and comprehensive standards for new teacher. It also seems necessary to make a major push to in-service and bring up to speed the huge group of veteran teachers to whom the advent of technology has been blind-sided and now, in a lot of cases, just muddling through trying to say afloat.

Internet 2
It sounds like a wonderfully "unadvertised" tool. It sounds as though it has been around for some time but sounds as though they need to spend some time informing teachers. This isn't something the normal teacher just "finds" with any regularity by themselves.

Going Beyond Pencils and Books
I like the idea of bar coding (bookmarking) a place on a DVD but how do you do that?

The reading for week 4 is very interesting. It give you the feeling, we still need to learn more about technology and how many different ways to use them in the classroom.
I think, it's a great opportunity to learn from other experiences, even if it sounds sometimes that it could be too complicated, but i think, it worth it to learn how to use it and to use it, so far the instructor feels confident enough to use it in the classroom.
I am always excited to know how new technology works and i think to use these in the classroom would make the students excited about the class, even if the material could look boring for some of them.

Week 4
I like the Going Beyond Pencils and Books. It talked about teachers and how they used technology in their subjects. They use things alike DVD’s to help teach the students. They said it helps the students because it’s a different form and they like it. I didn’t like that they talked about using a DVD player so much because there is a lot more than just that tool out there. When they started talking about using iMovie to help students in class learn about writing I got really pumped. I had never thought about using storyboards to help the students write. I knew it would help them with the order of the movie but never thoughts about it helping them to write better in the future.

Going beyond pencils and books

What I most enjoyed of this article was realizing how much creativity is involved in the use of some technologies. For example, first I found weird that a teacher focus his class on alien life forms but later I saw how many different things could be taught thinking on these unreal creatures. This exercise, that I belief should be fun for kids, can stimulate thinking skills, critical sense and creativity.

Every kid a publisher

I like the idea of having kids posting reviews of the books they read or other types of school work. It’s amazing how the technology allow people of all ages to have their voices heard. This experience can motivate kids to work harder in the quality of their assignments. The possibility of sharing their family and friends wherever they are can give them a sense of ownership and an emotional connection with the things they are learning. I think that the idea of every kid is publisher will not only stimulate them to appropriate the knowledge but also prepare them as better citizens willing to participate in public affairs.

Educational technology in teacher education programs for initial licensure

I think that it is really good that most of the institutions with teacher education programs are offering courses about the integration of technology. However, the number of courses and intensity of them is different among the institutions and lack of training is still reported as a barrier by many the teachers. The lack of time was also highly reported as a barrier and we all know that developing teaching activities with technology require a lot of time. However, I think that if the teacher education programs emphasize more the use of technology in classrooms and offer more training, teachers would see to work with technology as part of their jobs and not as an option.
